The Jimmy Lee Duo performed to a packed house at the Hudson Valley hot spot, di’Vine Wine Bar on January 7. The band’s typical instrumentation consists of a guitar and violin duet. Their first performance in 2023, did not disappoint.
Jimmy Lee Duo Set Openers
The Jimmy Lee duo opened the first set with the songs Last Kiss by Wayne Cochran, Wicked Game by Chris Isaac and Nothing Compares 2 U by Prince. These three songs are well suited for band.
The melancholy Last Kiss was originally recorded in 1961, but has had staying power through out the years, being covered by a range of artists including Pearl Jam.
The equally doleful, Wicked Game, seems to have transcended time. When performed by the Jimmy Lee Duo, the original reverb rich lead guitar performed by James Calvin Wilsey becomes transcendental when emanating from a violin.
Nothing Compares 2 U was originally released in 1985. However, the song is probably most well known for the Sinead O’Connor’s Performance in 1990. It has also been performed by numerous artists such as Aretha Franklin on her final studio album. Chris Cornell also released an acoustic version recorded with acoustic guitar and cello. The chord changes in Nothing Compares 2 U are wonderful to improvise on making for a great violin solo, when performed by Jimmy Lee Duo.
The video below captures the experience of the performance opening for Duo fans that could not manage to get in the door for the event.
